Landscape of Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei sits within the Namib Desert, one of the oldest deserts in the world. The dunes here are formed by wind carrying sand from the Atlantic coast over thousands of years.

The area features:

  • Massive red sand dunes, some over 300 meters high
  • White clay pans such as Deadvlei
  • Dry riverbeds of the Tsauchab River
  • Sharp contrast between red sand, white ground, and blue skies

Deadvlei is especially famous for its dead camel thorn trees that stand on a white clay pan, creating one of the most photographed scenes in Africa.
