The Taj at first light
The monument reads entirely differently in the hour after sunrise — softer light, thinner crowds, and a stillness the midday visit never offers. You enter before the gates open to general visitors.
Fatehpur Sikri - Akbar's abandoned capital
Built in the 1570s, deserted within 15 years, and largely intact. The Buland Darwaza gateway is one of the most startling structures in India – and it sits almost entirely crowd-free.
Keoladeo - Asia's finest bird sanctuary
A UNESCO World Heritage Site where cycle rickshaws are the only permitted transport. In winter, rare Siberian cranes join one of Asia’s most concentrated resident breeding populations.
Tigers at Ranthambore Fort
Nowhere else do tigers patrol beneath a living medieval fortress. The photographic backdrop – fort ramparts above the lakeside grassland – is unique to Ranthambore among all Indian parks.
Mehtab Bagh - the unseen Taj view
Akbar’s garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna offers the rear-view of the Taj that most visitors never see – and in late afternoon, the light is at its warmest.
Jantar Mantar - celestial science in stone
Maharaja Jai Singh’s 18th-century observatory is full of giant stone instruments accurate to two seconds. A curiosity at first, it becomes genuinely astonishing the more you understand it.

Arrive Delhi · Evening at leisure
Met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Delhi rewards an unhurried first evening – the lanes around Khan Market or Lodhi Colony make for an excellent first dinner in the city without plunging into the full depth of it.
Full day in Delhi – Old City to New Delhi monuments
Chandni Chowk on foot or cycle rickshaw in the early morning before the crowds build – the lanes around Jama Masjid are best before 9 am. The Red Fort deserves two hours. Cross to New Delhi in the afternoon for Humayun’s Tomb, the garden mausoleum that directly inspired the Taj Mahal, and Qutub Minar if time allows.
Agra
Days 3–4 · 1 night
Drive to Agra · Agra Fort · Mehtab Bagh at dusk
A 3-4 hour morning drive. Agra Fort sits on the Yamuna’s bank with a marble pavilion that frames the Taj Mahal across the river – Shah Jahan spent his final years here gazing at the monument from captivity. After the fort, Mehtab Bagh on the opposite bank gives the rear-elevation view of the Taj in the golden last light before sunset.
Taj Mahal at sunrise · Fatehpur Sikri · On to Bharatpur
Out before dawn. The Taj in the first 45 minutes after sunrise – soft diffused light, almost no crowds, and an atmosphere the afternoon visit simply cannot match. Take your time inside. After breakfast, Fatehpur Sikri: Akbar’s ghost capital built in the 1570s and left 15 years later. The Buland Darwaza gateway, the Panch Mahal, the Diwan-i-Khas – all intact, all largely uncrowded. Continue to Bharatpur for the night.
Bharatpur – Keoladeo National Park

Full day birding at Keoladeo – Asia’s great wetland sanctuary
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Asia’s most important bird sanctuaries. No private vehicles inside – cycle rickshaws move slowly enough to let you scan the reed beds and treetop colonies at eye level. In winter, migratory birds from Central Asia and Siberia fill the reserve; the resident breeding population is exceptional year-round. A specialist bird guide, bookable separately, transforms the experience.
Jaipur – the Pink City
Days 6-7 · 2 night
Drive to Jaipur · Old city bazaars in the afternoon
A 2-hour drive. Jaipur’s old city is best on foot in the late afternoon when the light turns warm amber and market activity peaks. Johari Bazaar for gemstones and jewellery – Jaipur supplies much of the world’s cut precious stones. Bapu Bazaar for block-print textiles and indigo fabrics. The sandstone facades turn deep rose as the sun drops.
Amber Fort · City Palace · Jantar Mantar
Amber Fort in the early morning – the hilltop views over the Maota Lake and the Aravalli hills are best before haze builds. The palace complex blends Rajput and Mughal aesthetics across a series of connected courtyards. City Palace in the afternoon: still partly home to the Jaipur royal family, with curated museum galleries. Jantar Mantar next door is deceptively profound – 19 monumental astronomical instruments that remain accurate to seconds, built in 1734.
Ranthambore National Park
Days 8–10 · 2 nights · 4 safaris
Drive to Ranthambore · Settle in · Evening lodge briefing
A 3-hour drive through increasingly dry Rajasthani scrubland. The forest begins to assert itself as you approach the park boundary. Check in, take the afternoon slowly, and attend the evening briefing: zone allocations, tiger territory maps, drive timings, camera settings for fast movement in dappled forest light.
Two full tiger drives – zones 2, 3 and 4
Zones 2, 3 and 4 cover the most productive territory – the grasslands around Rajbagh and Padam lakes where tigers come to drink at dawn, and the forest corridors below the fort wall. Ranthambore’s tigers are among India’s most visible; the ancient ruins scattered through the forest add a layer of atmosphere found nowhere else. Morning drive, afternoon drive, evening review.
Two more tiger drives · Last evening at the lodge
A second full day improves tiger sighting odds substantially and allows time to work on composition and light in zones covered quickly the day before. A second full day also allows deeper exploration of zones 5 and 6, which border the less-visited sections of the reserve. Final dinner at the lodge.
Drive back to Delhi · Tour concludes
A 5-hour drive returns you to Delhi by early afternoon. Eleven days, five destinations, two of the world’s great UNESCO-listed monuments and four days in the Indian wilderness.
