Leopard Safari in India
The leopard is India’s most widespread big cat, and the hardest to predict
Leopards live in rock hills, dry forest and mountain valleys across India. They hunt at dusk, rest in caves and move quietly. Where you go decides how you see them.
At Jawai, you track leopards on open granite outcrops. At Ranthambore and Pench, you search for them inside tiger reserves. In Ladakh, you scan snow slopes with a spotting scope for the grey ghost of the Himalaya.

Some Facts About Loepards
No two coats match
Each leopard carries its own rosette pattern. Researchers use it to identify individual cats on camera traps.
Tree larders
Leopards haul their kills up into trees. This keeps meat away from tigers, hyenas and wild dogs.
Neighbours of tigers
Leopard density is higher inside tiger reserves than outside protected areas, even with tigers around.
Flexible hunters
They eat anything from rodents and birds to chital and wild pig. This helps them live near people.
The black panther
A black panther is a leopard with a dark coat. It is a colour form, not a separate species.
Fully protected
Leopards sit in Schedule I of India’s Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The IUCN lists the species as Vulnerable.
