Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and City Visit
Arrive at Kigali International Airport where you are received and transferred to your hotel. If time allows, you can explore Kigali city.
Visit key places such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial and parts of the old city. Kigali is known for its clean streets and organised layout. After the visit, return to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Kigali to Akagera National Park
After breakfast, drive to Akagera National Park, located in eastern Rwanda. This is the only park in the country where you can see the Big Five.
As you approach the park, you may start spotting wildlife and a variety of birds across the savanna landscape. On arrival, check in at your lodge. Spend the evening at leisure and enjoy dinner while listening to sounds of the wild.
Day 3: Boat Safari and Transfer to Volcanoes Region
Start early with breakfast and head to Lake Ihema for a boat safari. This is one of the best ways to see hippos, crocodiles and water birds up close.
After the boat ride, begin your journey to the Volcanoes National Park region in the northwest. The drive is scenic with views of hills and countryside. On arrival in Musanze, check in at your lodge and relax before the next day’s trek.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, drive to the park headquarters at Kinigi for a briefing by park rangers. You are then assigned a gorilla group and begin your trek through forest terrain.
The park has several habituated gorilla families, making it one of the best places for trekking. Once you locate the group, you spend one hour observing them as they feed, groom and interact.
After the trek, return to your lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 5: Cultural Visit and Lake Kivu Stay
After breakfast, visit a local cultural village near Volcanoes National Park. Here you can experience traditional music, dance and daily activities of the local community.
You also visit a nearby centre to see how local banana beer is made. Later, drive to Gisenyi near Lake Kivu. Spend the afternoon by the lakeside enjoying the views. Check in at your accommodation and relax.
Day 6: Lake Kivu Boat Ride and Departure
After breakfast, go for a boat ride on Lake Kivu. The calm waters and surrounding hills make for a peaceful experience.
Later, drive back to Kigali and transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
